Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs: FAQ

What is a Forensic Psychologist?

A Forensic Psychologist is trained in various areas such as psychological assessments and interventions, research, consultancy, and training. They often work with individuals that experience a range of complex mental health difficulties and those who have engaged criminal behaviours. Prior to founding Women in Bloom Psychology, my background training and experience was working with individuals within clinical settings (e.g., inpatient mental health hospital settings, locked rehab, crisis resolution and home treatment teams) to help them learn new skills to manage the mental health difficulties they were facing and work towards behavioural change. As part of this, I was able to gain significant knowledge and experience of working therapeutically with women. I now have over 15 years' experience working in women's mental health and this is my passion.

Are psychology sessions the same as counselling?

Not quite. Whilst there are some similarities (e.g., they both provide you with a safe space in which you can explore thoughts and process difficult feelings without judgement), there are also differences. Within psychology sessions, both the therapist and the client are expected to be a bit more active. I will share new skills and ideas for new ways of interacting with both yourself and other people. The expectation is that you will be willing to try out some of the ideas that resonate with you between sessions.

People tend to get the most benefit from psychology sessions when they approach them with a sense of open-mindedness and a willingness to commit to the effort it takes to make lasting changes in their lives. If you are not looking to make changes and simply want a place to vent and be heard, then psychology sessions may not be the right fit for you.

How much do sessions cost?

Individual assessment sessions are £110 per 50 minute session or £180 for per 90 minute session.

Individual therapy sessions are £110 per 50 minute session.

Do you have in person options as well as remote?

Sessions can take place either online via Google Meet videoconferencing or in person at a dedicated therapy room near Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire.

What will happen in my first session?

Generally, our first session together will form part of the initial assessment phase of therapy. This will give us the chance to meet and to begin collaboratively thinking about what has brought you to therapy, what your goals for therapy might be, and what treatment approaches might best meet your needs. As part of this, we may also discuss some of your past and current experiences. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions that you might have. The important thing to be aware of is that we will go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

How long will we work together for?

The great thing about private therapy sessions is that we are not restricted by the rigid constraints that you might find in public services.

Instead, therapy length will vary and this is something we can discuss and agree collaboratively. For some, a few sessions will be enough. Others who may have more complex needs may benefit from one to two years in therapy. Either way, we will have regular reviews of your therapy goals to ensure that we are actively working towards achieving the changes you want to make.

Do I need to attend therapy sessions every week?

I work on both a weekly and fortnightly basis with clients depending on their needs and financial situations. Weekly sessions may often step down to fortnightly sessions eventually. Fortnightly sessions can be beneficial as they provide a longer break between sessions to allow more time to process, reflect, and embed learning. It also saves you money, which can make therapy more sustainable for some people. I'm happy to discuss what best meets each clients' needs.

How do I know if you are the right fit for me?

It can be so tricky to find a psychologist who is 'the right fit' for you, and it can feel awkward to end sessions with a psychologist if you have already started working with them. For this and other reasons, I offer a one-off, free of charge initial telephone consultation call to prospective clients (this usually lasts up to 20 minutes). This gives us both a chance to check out if we are the right fit for each other. If we decide that we are not for whatever reason, I can help to point you in the direction of someone else who might be better suited if you wish.
